About the App

GymClasses Australia provides quick and easy access to fitness class timetables of several Australian gym chains, currently including – Fitness First, Fernwood Fitness, Broadway Sydney, and Sculpt Training Centre (QLD).

Using the Full Version of the App, you can create your own list of favourite fitness clubs (out of the total list of currently supported gyms) to access class schedule information in literally 1 tap on your phone screen.

Lite Version is free, but offers only very basic timetable viewing functionality.

The class timetables are updated daily using the public data posted on respective gyms websites. You need Internet access to retrieve timetable information with GymClasses Australia.

Why use it?

Short answer – because it’s quicker and easier than browsing any of the currently included gym websites.

Long answer – compare bookmarking Fitness First St Leonards Club timetable in your mobile Safari browser and then every time you need that timetable you wait for ~250 Kbytes web page to load trying to fit itself on your phone screen, to opening GymClasses App, tapping once on your favourited club name and loading a 15 Kbyte chunk of simple HTML data to view your class timetable.

Plus with GymClasses (full version only) you get to tap a button next to your desired class time to instantly add an entry to your iPhone calendar.

Features

View class timetables of Fitness First, Fernwood Fitness, Broadway Sydney and Sculpt Training Centre in just a couple of taps on your phone screen.

Day selection remembered when looking at different clubs: you can check what classes are on a certain day at different clubs with minimal effort.

Daily data updates (based on the gym websites availability).

Create My Clubs list to access your favourite classes even easier.

Easily add any selected timetable class times into your iPhone calendar as Events or reminders.

Want to see your gym in GymClasses?

There is a convenient web form now integrated in the App, which allows you to request addition of your gym or fitness club to GymClasses. Terms and Conditions apply.

Important Notes

Internet connection is required to retrieve new timetable data, and at all times if you are using Lite Version. For the Full Version however, once a club is added to favourites, its timetable is saved locally on your phone, and will be used when you try viewing timetable while being offline;

Timetable data is derived from the respective gym’s website, and does not take into account any last minute changes or extra announcements;

Best efforts are taken to ensure timetable accuracy and our data is updated daily. However, no guarantees can be made and we are not liable for any inaccuracies;

If you notice timetable inaccuracy, please leave feedback on our Facebook page, or talk to me on Twitter – there are buttons added for your convenience on the About screen of the App;

This application is not endorsed or sponsored in any way by the gym chains;

All class timetable data is property of its respective gym chain. This application is only providing a new efficient way of accessing it;

Ability to receive timetable data is dependent on the respective gym’s website. We are not liable for any unavailability of data due to problems with any of the websites, or unexpected changes to how the particular gym displays its class timetables.

Introduction from Clare, the content author

For some of us maintaining a healthy weight does not come naturally and we need to work at it. We need to change some habits that aren’t helping us and changing habits can be very difficult. We need some coaching along the way to keep us motivated and focused on our goal.

I’m not a qualified weight loss, exercise or coaching professional. However, I was overweight for many years, I was unhappy and it preyed on my mind every day. Now, I’ve found a way to change my habits and become healthy. You can too.

I’ve read many books on weight loss. I’ve seen dietitians, naturopaths, nutritionists and personal trainers. I have used these experiences to create over 300 pieces of motivation to help you stay determined, focused and positive on your weight loss journey.

Once you’ve achieved your weight loss goals, you will enjoy the new healthy you so much that you’ll realize making the change was “a piece of cake”!

I’m happy to announce that GymClasses Australia version 1.6 is finally released into the App Store.

The main changes

Removed Gold’s Gym. More on this below;

The clubs data-file is now being retrieved from the web;

Added ‘Retry’ buttons for convenience, in case your Internet connection drops out;

Lots of minor UI improvements throughout the App;

Updated FAQ, but nobody cares about this one, right?

Why I removed Gold’s Gym

This is becoming a popular question lately, and I’m surprised not a single person cared about my intention to remove Gold’s Gym when I announced it on Facebook and Twitter several weeks before this release happened…

The main reason is that Gold’s Gym Parramatta never replied to my messages and requests for cooperation, and Gold’s Gym Surry Hills replied but did nothing to accommodate my simple request to update their website timetable version in a way that would allow GymClasses system to read it automatically.

And secondly, there was not much general interest in Gold’s Gym – based on GymClasses usage statistics that I’m monitoring very closely.

What’s that with clubs data-file?

All previous versions of GymClasses had the data-file containing the list of all supported gym clubs and branches included in the App bundle, i.e. you had it installed locally on your phone.

This became problematic to maintain, as gyms never tell me if they are about to launch a new club, or close an old one. So when they do – the whole system breaks. I.e. you still can see your timetables, but they stop being updated. Or, which is worse, you presume that, say, Haberfield Fitness First club still exists, while it doesn’t…

In this version (1.6) I made GymClasses smarter by moving that clubs data-file on the web, where I can update it within minutes if something suddenly changes.

There is a fall-back mechanism built in now as well, that allows you to use the “local copy” of the data-file, in case your Internet connection is playing up or drops out. So the “old way” is still supported, don’t worry!

Next steps

I am currently looking into potential integration of 2 other gyms/fitness clubs and will keep you updated on this site, Twitter and Facebook.
